Severe Flooding Causes School Closures and Evacuations in Central Kentucky

COLESBURG, Ky. — Severe flooding prompted widespread evacuations and school closures across Central Kentucky on April 7, 2025, as officials scramble to respond to rising waters affecting numerous communities.
Authorities began evacuating residents in Colesburg at 8 a.m. after water levels rapidly rose, submerging homes and streets. “We used about 20 boats to rescue at least 40 people from the area,” a local official told reporters at the scene. Many evacuees took refuge at a nearby church, seeking safety as they awaited further assistance.
According to Emergency Management Agency officials, water levels are still rising, with municipal crews working tirelessly to monitor the situation. “The water has nowhere to go, and we’re preparing for it to rise even more in various regions,” the EMA official added. Residents in affected areas are being urged to remain vigilant and avoid flooded roads.
In response to the flooding, Jefferson County Public Schools announced they would not hold in-person classes on Monday, April 7, opting to use a Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) day. The same protocol will be followed on Tuesday.
The University of Louisville and several other school districts in the area, including Bullitt and Hardin County, also reported closures on Monday. Bullitt County Public Schools declared Tuesday as a rescheduled Bullitt Day, meaning no school for students. Similarly, Hardin County Schools will transition to virtual instruction.
As for the weather, the Salt River is predicted to crest at 37.2 feet by Monday afternoon, exacerbating the already dire conditions. In Bullitt County, areas such as Lebanon Junction are currently without power due to flooding.
The Kentucky National Guard has been deployed to assist with evacuation efforts and provide support to county officials. “The community is resilient, and we’re rallying together to face this challenge,” a local leader stated.
Residents can find more information on school closures and updates through district websites as the situation evolves. Families are advised to stay informed and prioritize safety during this severe weather event.
