Severe Thunderstorms Flooding Southern Us

BRENHAM, Texas — The search continues for a school-aged girl who was swept away in rapidly rising floodwaters on Monday. Officials reported the incident occurred around 4:25 p.m. as severe thunderstorms impacted areas across Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

The Brenham Fire Department stated that the girl was walking home from school when adjacent creek waters rose unexpectedly, pulling her into the swift current. Bystanders and police attempted to rescue her, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

A nearby neighbor witnessed the event and jumped into the creek, trying to save the girl before she was fully pulled away. Her sister ran for help as the neighbor made contact with the girl but could not hold on due to the force of the water.

As flash flood warnings remain in effect for parts of the Gulf Coast, rainfall totals could exceed six inches in some locations. Southeastern Louisiana is particularly at risk of extended periods of heavy rain, leading to potential road closures and emergency situations.

The National Weather Service advises residents to heed the warning: “Turn around. Don’t drown” when approaching flooded roadways. Drivers may not be able to accurately gauge water depth, especially at night, making it dangerous to proceed.

As severe weather pours across the South-Central U.S., flash flood watches cover about 40 million people, spanning from western New Mexico to Louisiana. Reports of damaging winds and hail have already surfaced, with numerous warnings issued.

At least 50 storm reports indicated severe conditions across ten states, leading to further concerns of flash flooding. Portions of the Deep South and eastern Texas could face the heaviest rains, threatening to exacerbate already saturated ground conditions.

Heavy rains are expected to persist, with possible tornado watches issued for areas in southeastern New Mexico and western Texas. Residents and authorities are tracking the situation closely as thunderstorms are projected to continue.
