Severe Snowfall in South Africa Leads to Road Closures and Driver Stranding
HARRISMITH – Extreme weather conditions have struck various regions within South Africa, resulting in significant disruptions. The provinces of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and the Eastern Cape have been particularly affected by the severe snowfall. Local authorities confirmed one fatality related to the adverse conditions on Saturday evening.
The inclement weather has necessitated the closure of several major roadways, notably impacting the N3 highway, a key transport route between Johannesburg and Durban. This highway is managed by the N3 Toll Concession. In a statement released earlier, Thania Dhoogra, spokesperson for the N3 Toll Concession, provided updates regarding the status of the road closures. “The safety of our motorists is paramount, and given the current weather conditions, certain sections of the N3 remain closed until it is deemed safe,” said Dhoogra.
Motorists have been stranded overnight as emergency crews and local authorities work tirelessly to clear the roads and ensure the safety of travelers. The South African Weather Service has issued warnings for continued severe weather and advises caution for anyone traveling in affected areas.
