Severe Storms Cause Massive Power Outages in Toronto
A torrential downpour on Tuesday led to widespread flooding and power outages in Toronto, affecting tens of thousands of residents. The outage map of Toronto Hydro displayed numerous blacked-out areas across the city, particularly in the western half from the Mississauga border to Spadina, with additional sporadic outages elsewhere.
As of 1 p.m., no official figures were released, but Toronto Hydro‘s map hinted at a potentially six-figure impacted population, marking one of the most extensive power failures in recent memory.
Toronto Hydro issued a statement on social media, stating, “We are investigating an outage affecting Toronto Hydro customers and will supply updates as they become available, including an estimated restoration time.”
Within minutes, a subsequent update from Toronto Hydro acknowledged the scale of the problem, mentioning they were actively addressing widespread outages triggered by a significant supply loss across large sections of the city, collaborating with HydroOne on the restoration efforts.
The utility company expressed gratitude for the public’s patience during this challenging period, assuring continued work towards resolving the situation swiftly.
On the outage map, Toronto Hydro advised customers against contacting them if their power was out to allow officials to focus on critical safety and emergency issues. Restoration times for numerous affected areas were estimated between 10 and 11 p.m. Although the situation is evolving rapidly, officials are working diligently to address the widespread power disruptions.
