Severe Storms Expected Across Alabama, Tornadoes Possible Tonight

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — An Alert Day has been declared for North and Central Alabama as severe thunderstorms threaten the area overnight into Monday morning. Meteorologists expect intense weather conditions, including damaging wind gusts over 60 miles per hour, large hail, and the possibility of tornadoes.
The Alert Day warning highlights the potential for life-threatening weather, with a tornado watch currently in effect for Lamar, Marion, Fayette, Winston, Cullman, and Walker counties until 5 a.m. Monday.
According to the Storm Prediction Center, storms will begin moving across northwestern Alabama shortly, affecting The Shoals, Decatur, Athens, and Huntsville before 7 a.m. The storms are expected to intensify as they reach Birmingham and surrounding areas between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. Heavy rain and frequent lightning are also anticipated.
“The wind threat appears highest given the setup we have in place,” said Brylee Brown, a meteorologist with the WVTM 13 Weather Team. “We’re closely monitoring for any isolated tornadoes that may try to spin up along the line.”
Residents should prepare for localized flash flooding, as some areas could receive more than three inches of rain in only a few hours. “Regardless of severe weather materializing specifically in your location, expect significant disruption, especially during the morning commute,” Brown added.
The worst of the weather is predicted to end by noon over east-central Alabama, with conditions improving as the front moves south. However, rain and thunder may linger into the afternoon as a narrow band of storms continues to move through.
The Weather Prediction Center warns that although the severe threat will lower after midday, heavy rain is still expected. The area will likely see warmer weather conditions leading into the week, with temperatures rising toward record warmth.
“Upon the arrival of cooler air later in the evening, Monday night should bring much-needed relief from the heat, but the storms tonight could have significant impacts,” warned Brown.
Residents are encouraged to remain weather-aware, stay tuned to local forecasts, and have a plan in place for emergencies as the storms develop.
