North Texas Storms Severe Thunderstorm Warning

DALLAS, Texas – A Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of Texas, including the DallasFort Worth Metroplex, as millions brace for severe storms expected to arrive late Sunday evening.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned residents about destructive winds that could reach gusts of up to 90 mph. In a Sunday update, the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) highlighted a developing severe weather outbreak across much of North Texas and southern Oklahoma.

As a result, a PDS Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for western and central Kansas, northwest Oklahoma, and the Texas Panhandle. The SPC noted that such severe thunderstorm warnings are extremely rare, having been issued only 25 times since 2006.

The storm threat comes after an apparent tornado caused significant damage in Oklahoma on Saturday. The SPC has now elevated the threat level for portions of the south-central U.S. to a Level 4 risk, which affects nearly 7.5 million people in major cities such as Dallas and Fort Worth.

Additionally, over 4 million individuals in Oklahoma and parts of Texas face a Level 3 risk. While tornadoes pose a threat, meteorologists indicate that the main concern will be destructive winds between 80 and 100 mph, fueled by strong winds aloft and a cooler air mass moving in.

Forecasters are also warning of possible hail up to 5 inches, which is considerable. The widespread storms could lead to hazardous conditions, creating heavy rainfall and potential flooding.

The NWS advises residents to stay vigilant as severe weather could develop quickly in the hours ahead.
