Severe Thunderstorm Warning Pennsylvania

READING, Pa. – A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until 7:30 PM EDT for southeastern Berks and northwestern Montgomery counties, issued by the National Weather Service (NWS). As of 6:39 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm was detected near Birdsboro, approximately eight miles east of Reading, moving northeast at speeds of 25 mph.

The storm is reported to produce hazardous conditions, including wind gusts of up to 60 mph and penny-sized hail. Radar has indicated these threats, prompting concerns for potential damage to roofs, siding, trees, and power lines in the affected areas.

Communities impacted by the storm include Boyertown, Lorane, Birdsboro, Reiffton, Red Hill, Geryville, Amity Gardens, Bally, East Greenville, Green Lane, Pennsburg, St. Lawrence, Gilbertsville, Bechtelsville, Halfway House, and Telford. The alert also covers the Northeast Extension of Interstate 476 between mile markers 36 and 39.

Residents are advised to take precautions and move to an interior room on the lowest floor of their homes or buildings to ensure safety from possible debris.

In addition to the thunderstorm, there are reports of a possible tornado in the area. A tornado warning was previously issued around 6:12 PM EDT for parts of Berks County, citing a severe thunderstorm capable of generating tornado conditions near Adamstown.

The weather service warns, “Take cover now! Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows.” If outdoors, in a mobile home, or a vehicle, individuals should seek substantial shelter immediately.

The affected municipalities included Wyomissing Hills, West Lawn, West Reading, and several others. For those traveling on Interstate 176, the warning extends between mile markers 6 and 11.

While thunderstorms can bring heavy rain and lightning, the current storm raises particular concerns for wind damage. Residents in the region should remain alert and monitor local alerts for updates as conditions change.

The National Weather Service continues to monitor the storm and advises community members to remain vigilant. Understanding the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning is vital; a watch indicates conditions are favorable for tornadoes, while a warning signals immediate danger.
