Severe Thunderstorms In St. Louis

ST. LOUIS — Severe weather conditions are developing as thunderstorms are expected to affect the St. Louis area on Tuesday. A Weather Impact Alert Day has been issued as a cold front moves through Missouri and Illinois.

The storm threat is slated to materialize during the afternoon when humidity levels rise, increasing the likelihood of strong to severe thunderstorms. Heavy rain is expected to accompany these storms, particularly in areas south and east of I-70.

The Storm Prediction Center has categorized Monday and Tuesday under various severe weather risks. On Monday, the severe risk will fade as temperatures cool in the evening. However, by Tuesday morning through Wednesday morning, conditions indicate a higher chance of severe weather.

Morning rain may be scattered, with some pockets of heavy precipitation around commute times. The afternoon is anticipated to bring more instability, leading to stronger storms. Current forecasts suggest wind gusts exceeding 60 mph and quarter-sized hail may be the primary threats.

While the potential for tornadoes exists, experts indicate that conditions will be less severe than other spring storms previously experienced. Forecasters recommend that residents stay alert, as the situation could develop further depending on how early thunderstorms unfold and the positioning of the incoming cold front.

Looking ahead, a second Weather Alert Day is anticipated on Wednesday, as the Thursday warm front is expected to bring more storm activity, with hail and wind remaining significant threats. Further monitoring will be needed as the week progresses.
