Severe Thunderstorms And Lightning Strike Cause Chaos In Sydney

Sydney is currently experiencing severe weather conditions with intense thunderstorms and lightning strikes causing chaos in the city. The wild weather has resulted in several injuries, including a lightning strike incident near the iconic Sydney Opera House. Four individuals were struck by lightning while seeking shelter beneath a tree near the entrance to the Botanic Gardens. The injured parties have been swiftly transported to hospitals, with two victims taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the other two to St Vincent's Hospital.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued severe thunderstorm warnings across various regions in New South Wales, including the Mid North Coast, Hunter, North West Slopes and Plains, Northern Tablelands, Central Tablelands, and Central West Slopes and Plains Forecast Districts. These warnings highlight the potential for heavy rainfall leading to flash floods in the affected areas.

As the storms continue to batter Sydney, the Total Lightning Network has detected an alarming number of lightning strikes within a 200km radius of Newcastle. The Newcastle region is facing slow-moving thunderstorms, which could result in isolated areas experiencing high rainfall and frequent lightning activity.

Additionally, a separate severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Greater Newcastle and the Gosford/Wyong areas. Residents in these regions are urged to stay vigilant as heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding has already been detected near Wangi Wangi and Awaba.

Meanwhile, in Western Australia, the aftermath of Ex-Cyclone Lincoln is causing concern as it moves towards the northwest coast of the state. The ex-cyclone, currently tracking from the Gulf of Carpentaria across central NT, is anticipated to bring strong winds and heavy rainfall to the region, with Tennant Creek already experiencing substantial rainfall.

The Sydney storm has resulted in power outages affecting thousands of homes and businesses in various suburbs, including Balgowlah, Seaforth, Manly Vale, Hornsby, Turramurra, Thornleigh, and Belrose. Traffic disruptions, flash flooding, and damaged rail equipment at Milsons Point have added to the chaos across the city.

The NSW SES is on high alert, with Castle Hill and Bexley Road in Earlwood receiving multiple calls for assistance due to flooding. The public is advised to exercise caution, avoid floodwaters, and follow the guidance of emergency service personnel in these challenging weather conditions.
