Severe Thunderstorms and Tornado Watch Impact Central Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Central Missouri is bracing for severe thunderstorms this evening as emergency management agencies issue multiple warnings. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning remains in effect for Boone, northwestern Cole, and northeastern Moniteau counties until 6:30 PM CDT.
At approximately 5:51 PM CDT, severe thunderstorms were reported along a line stretching from Rocheport to 20 miles southwest of High Point. The storms are moving northeast at 60 mph, bringing projected wind gusts of up to 70 mph and quarter-sized hail.
Radar indicates a significant risk of hail damage to vehicles and considerable damage to trees and structures. Residents in the path of the storm should seek shelter indoors. This includes areas expected to be impacted such as Tipton, Latham, Harrisburg, and other towns and state parks, including Rock Bridge State Park and Finger Lakes State Park.
“Anyone outdoors should move to a well-built structure and stay away from windows,” warned officials. A Tornado Watch is also in effect until 11 PM CDT for parts of central Missouri, heightening the severity of weather conditions.
The National Weather Service confirmed considerable damage potential, highlighting that residents should prepare for hail and strong winds, as the storms could lead to wind-related property damage, particularly to mobile homes and outbuildings.
As part of the comprehensive advisory, emergency preparedness information has been provided. Cooper County Emergency Management director advised residents on critical steps such as having an evacuation plan and maintaining communication with family members regarding safety.
In addition to thunderstorm warnings, a Wind Advisory is in effect until 1 AM CDT Saturday. South winds between 20 and 30 mph are expected, with gusts exceeding 55 mph, impacting areas across both Missouri and parts of Illinois.
Officials recommend securing outdoor objects that could be blown away and being cautious while driving, particularly for high-profile vehicles. The current conditions raise concerns for potential power outages due to downed tree limbs and other wind-related incidents.
“It’s essential to stay updated through local media for any changes in conditions or necessary updates regarding the storm,” added emergency officials.
The situation remains actively monitored, with local weather services advising residents to remain vigilant and take precautions as severe weather continues into the night.
