Severe Weather Alert: Strong Storms Expected in Central Ohio Tonight

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The 10 Weather Impact team has issued a Weather Impact Alert Day for the second half of Sunday and early Monday morning as a powerful storm system is expected to bring severe weather to central Ohio.
The warm and humid air that moved into the region over the weekend has created conditions ripe for strong storms. Following a morning of rainfall, attention now shifts to a new round of storms anticipated to develop after sunset.
The alert is effective Sunday evening through early Monday, with severe weather possible across all areas in the 10TV viewing region. Meteorologists are on standby as the first round of thunderstorms is set to arrive between 6 to 8 p.m. in western counties, 7 to 10 p.m. in Columbus, and 8 to 10 p.m. in the eastern counties.
The forecast indicates the potential for damaging winds, hail, and even spin-up tornadoes. Hail is defined as severe if it measures at least 1 inch in diameter, roughly the size of a quarter. Residents in the area are advised to prepare their homes and yards for potential damage.
Meteorologist Meredith Garofalo from WBNS-TV said, “We’re closely monitoring the situation, especially as we anticipate storms forming after dark, which increases the risk for unexpected severe weather.” She emphasized the importance of having a way to receive warnings, such as a fully charged phone or a NOAA weather radio.
Garofalo noted that while damaging winds are likely to be the primary threat, there remains a possibility for flooding and minor rain after the storms pass. “Most of the severe activity should begin after sundown, around 8 p.m. for our eastern counties, but wind remains our primary concern,” she added.
As storms sweep through, meteorologists expect the risk of tornadoes to rise, particularly around the edges of bowing segments of the storm system. “While the risk is present, it’s essential to stay connected to updates as conditions evolve,” Garofalo said.
After the main line of severe storms passes, rain will likely linger into Monday morning, but the immediate severe threat should diminish. “We will continue to monitor the system closely and provide updates as necessary,” concluded the Weather Impact Team.
