Storm Damage Tornado Central Alabama

Tuscaloosa, Alabama – The National Weather Service has issued a high-risk alert for severe weather in Central Alabama, predicting significant tornado activity today, Saturday, March 15, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The threat level has been classified as 5 out of 5, indicating severe conditions are likely to produce long-tracked and potentially violent tornadoes.

In addition to tornadoes, meteorologists warn of damaging winds that may reach gusts of up to 70 mph and large hailstones, potentially the size of baseballs. A wind advisory has been activated across Central Alabama, with sustained winds expected at 10 to 20 mph and peak gusts up to 40 mph from 7 a.m. Saturday until 1 a.m. Sunday.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and prepare for possible evacuations. The issuance of a tornado watch indicates that conditions are favorable for tornado formation, and it is crucial to stay updated through local weather notifications.

“When a tornado watch is issued, it is essential to pay close attention to the weather. Be ready to seek shelter if a tornado warning is announced,” said a spokesperson from the National Weather Service. Tornado warnings are issued when a tornado is sighted or detected on radar, signaling imminent danger to life and property.

The University of Alabama has issued measures for students and staff in the event of severe weather. The UA Safety app will provide notifications for weather watches and warnings pertinent to Tuscaloosa County. The university plans to keep shelters open for those on campus if a tornado watch is declared. Off-campus residents are advised to locate nearby storm shelters, which are also available for pets in designated areas.

n

If unable to reach a designated shelter, individuals are encouraged to find the nearest sturdy building. Those in apartment complexes should move to the lowest level, avoiding upper floors.

n

“Anyone not on campus should seek shelter in a central area of a sturdy building and stay away from windows,” the spokesperson advised. Emergency response teams are prepped to handle any storm damages that might occur. Residents are reminded to report any damage to the University of Alabama Police Department at 205-348-5454.

n

As the severe weather unfolds, individuals are advised to reach out to family and friends once they are safe, using text messaging or social media. Precautions should be taken to avoid approaching downed power lines or entering damaged buildings until they are cleared by emergency officials.

For ongoing updates and safety resources, individuals can refer to the UA Safety app or local news channels.
