Severe Thunderstorms Tornado Warnings Mid South

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A significant severe weather outbreak is forecasted to impact the Mid-South late this afternoon through early Monday morning, prompting officials to issue enhanced alerts.

The National Weather Service has designated the area under an Enhanced Risk (Level 3/5) for severe thunderstorms. Meteorologists warn that the primary threats consist of damaging winds, large hail up to 2 inches in diameter, and tornadoes, some of which could reach EF-2 strength or higher.

“The most dangerous window for severe weather will be after sunset into the overnight hours,” said meteorologist Payton Domschke. “Residents need to ensure they have multiple ways to receive alerts.” The storm system is expected to begin affecting the region around 4 p.m. and could produce severe cells ahead of the main line, particularly in northeast Arkansas.

As the evening progresses, thunderstorms are projected to move toward the metro area around 7 to 10 p.m., potentially clearing out by 1 a.m. or stretching until 3 a.m. if the system slows down.

Abundant storm fuel has increased confidence in the outbreak. “The energy levels in the atmosphere are very high,” Domschke added, emphasizing the need for preparedness as the severe weather unfolds.

Post-storm conditions are expected to bring cooler, drier air by Monday and Tuesday, but forecasters warn that an active weather pattern will resume midweek. This could lead to additional rounds of storms and widespread flooding, with some areas possibly receiving between 5 to 15 inches of rain.

The upcoming forecast includes:

  • Sunday Evening: 100% chance of showers and storms, high around 81 degrees.
  • Monday: Rain expected to taper off by morning, high around 63 degrees with a milder afternoon.
  • Tuesday: Mostly sunny with a high near 72 degrees.
  • Midweek: Set to turn active again with a high chance of severe weather.

Residents are encouraged to remain alert and have a safety plan in place as the week progresses. Emergency services and local authorities are on standby to assist with any potential severe weather impacts.
