Central Oregon Winter Storm Weather Forecast

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) – A significant winter storm is set to impact Central Oregon, coinciding with the Vernal Equinox at 2:01 a.m. on Thursday. The storm is expected to bring heavy snowfall in the Cascades and a wintry mix at lower elevations, creating hazardous travel conditions.

Starting late Wednesday evening, Deschutes and Jefferson Counties will experience strong winds gusting up to 35 mph in mountainous regions, alongside a forecast of 1 to 2 feet of snow, particularly in the La Pine and Sunriver areas. With a Winter Storm Warning in effect until 11 p.m. Thursday, those traveling in the affected areas should exercise caution.

A cold front is approaching that will introduce a mix of rain and snow, transitioning to all snow overnight. Higher elevations above 4,500 feet may see significant snow accumulation, while regions along Highway 97 are likely to experience slushy roads and patchy ice.

According to John Carroll, KTVZ’s Local Alert Weather Chief Meteorologist, the snowfall will persist into Thursday morning, causing deteriorated travel conditions. “Blowing and drifting snow will reduce visibility, making travel especially dangerous through the mountains,” he warned.

Slightly milder temperatures on Thursday will support a mix of rain and snow across the High Desert. That evening, the wintry weather is expected to linger, continuing into Friday. Accumulations across the Cascades could reach between 8-12 inches, while areas in La Pine and Sunriver might see 1-3 inches.

Friday is expected to bring a mix of weather conditions with rain expected in valley areas and snow continuing to accumulate in mountain regions. Following this storm, the forecast suggests an increase in temperatures, with highs reaching the low 60s on Sunday and the low 70s by Monday.

With weather conditions changing rapidly and the potential for hazardous travel, local authorities are emphasizing safety precautions. Residents are advised to stay informed by downloading the KTVZ weather app available for both iOS and Android.
