Severe Weather Storm Preparation Tips

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — With severe storms looming, residents are being advised to take immediate precautions to safeguard their homes. ABC 6 meteorologist Sarah Converse issued a warning on March 31, 2025, emphasizing the importance of preparation as strong winds and other harsh weather conditions are expected to hit the area.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) encourages homeowners to implement specific strategies to minimize potential damage. “Homeowners should focus on critical areas of their properties, such as the roof, garage, and windows,” Converse said.

One effective method to protect roofs is the installation of straps on roof beams, which can help secure structures against strong gusts of wind. Additionally, garage doors can be particularly vulnerable during storms. Installing girts—structural beams made of wood or steel—can enhance the integrity of these doors and prevent them from being compromised.

Windows are also at risk during severe weather events. Neurotically placed storm shutters can serve as a first line of defense against flying debris that could shatter glass. “It’s essential to take proactive measures to protect these vulnerable points in your home,” Converse added.

Beyond structural reinforcements, securing outdoor items is crucial. Homeowners are advised to secure patio furniture, garden decorations, and any other objects that could become hazardous projectiles during high winds. Trimming trees and removing dead branches can further reduce the chances of damage as well.

Finally, homeowners should take this opportunity to review their home insurance coverage. Understanding the extent of protection against storm-related damages can provide additional peace of mind during severe weather periods. Residents are encouraged to act quickly, as the storms are predicted to arrive imminently.
