Geelong Storm Flooding

The Royal Geelong Show was forced to close for the remainder of Friday evening due to unexpected severe weather conditions that struck the region. Heavy rainfall leading to flash floods was reported, compelling organizers to prioritize public safety and halt festivities temporarily.

According to the Geelong Racecourse rain gauge, the area received an unusually heavy downpour, recording over 50mm of rain in the brief span between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm. Emergency services noted a significant number of incidents, estimating nearly 100 reports related to flooding and damage, predominantly affecting the Belmont and Grovedale areas, including regions near the Barwon River.

Northern localities such as Bannockburn and Lara also experienced flooding earlier in the day. The inclement weather precipitated a decision by show organizers to shut down operations for the evening. “Due to weather and safety concerns for the community, the Geelong show has decided to close effective immediately for the evening and will prepare to reopen from 9:30 am tomorrow morning,” stated event organizers. They further reassured the public of clear weather for the upcoming weekend.

Reports have emerged of flooding impacting Breakwater Road, particularly between Settlement Road and High Street in Belmont, and a collision has been noted in the same vicinity. Local authorities have advised the public to avoid these areas where possible to ensure personal safety.

Adding some positivity amidst weather concerns, local artist Callum Preston‘s exhibit was prepared to showcase at the event when weather allows. His installation, a child-friendly educational display developed in collaboration with Barwon Water, aims to engage young audiences on topics concerning sewerage and wastewater management.
