Severe Weather Atlanta Tornado Warnings

ATLANTA, Ga. — Severe weather swept across the metro Atlanta area on Saturday, resulting in multiple tornado warnings and heavy thunderstorms. Meteorologist Laurann Robinson from FOX 5 Storm Team monitored the system closely as it developed in north Georgia.

Numerous tornado warnings were issued throughout the area, particularly affecting counties such as Jasper, Newton, and Upson. Severe thunderstorm warnings were also in effect for parts of northwestern Georgia. As the storm progressed, reports surfaced of a waterspout developing over Lake Lanier, which reportedly made landfall as a tornado.

The storm system tracked eastward, bringing with it threats of moderate-sized hail, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds. The inclement weather significantly impacted the BravesDodgers baseball game at Truist Park, causing a delay until conditions improved just after 10 p.m. ET.

Residents were advised to prepare for damaging winds, small hail, frequent lightning, and thunder throughout the evening. Fortunately, the storm front was expected to clear overnight, setting up a sunny Sunday with cooler temperatures in the lower 70s.

The storms posed various challenges, including the cancellation of the Atlanta Beltline Lantern Parade, which was scheduled for Saturday evening. Despite the threats posed by the storms, damage reports remained minimal.

According to the National Weather Service, as of 11:22 p.m., the severe weather threat had concluded, marking an end to the turbulence that gripped the area throughout the evening. The NWS confirmed an EF-1 tornado occurred over Lake Lanier.

For updates on weather conditions, residents can rely on local resources, including the FOX 5 app, which offers live radar and a seven-day forecast.
