Severe Weather Impacts Travel and Events in Denver

DENVER, Colo. — Severe thunderstorms rolled through the Denver metro area Sunday afternoon, causing significant disruptions. The National Weather Service reported that between 1.5 and 2.5 inches of rain fell within just two hours, leading to heavy delays at Denver International Airport.
The storms began around 3 p.m. and moved in a northeasterly direction, leading to a ground stop at the airport. Hundreds of flights were delayed as a result, impacting many travelers.
In addition to travel disruptions, the Colorado Rockies baseball game experienced a weather delay. The strong storms brought heavy rain and lightning, prompting safety concerns.
Late-night rain showers can be expected, which will begin to clear early Monday morning. Meteorologists predict a dry start for Memorial Day, but similar to the previous days, thunderstorms are expected to develop in the afternoon. Areas south of Colorado Springs are under a severe weather threat, while the Denver metro area is not included in that risk.
Throughout Monday, moisture pooling ahead of a cool front will create conditions for scattered showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures are expected to rebound to near normal levels on Tuesday, with afternoon thunderstorms continuing to be likely through the week, a typical pattern for May.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated on weather conditions through local forecasts and alerts.
