Severe Weather Preparations: Tornado Drills and Safety Tips

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A tornado warning for Forsyth and Patrick counties has expired as North Carolina prepares for severe weather this week. With severe weather preparedness at the forefront, residents are urged to understand tornado alerts and the necessary safety precautions.

The National Weather Service issues several types of alerts: watches, warnings, and emergencies. A tornado watch indicates conditions are favorable for severe weather development, whereas a tornado warning signifies that a tornado has been confirmed via radar or by local spotters. In contrast, a tornado emergency is declared when a strong tornado is posing a significant threat to life and property.

Brian Slocum, a local meteorologist, explained, “When a tornado warning is issued, it’s critical to take action immediately. Seek shelter in a secure location, preferably an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.”

This week marks Severe Weather Preparedness Week in North Carolina, making it an ideal time for community members to review their emergency plans. A statewide tornado drill has been rescheduled to 9:30 a.m. on Friday due to possible severe weather forecasts on Wednesday.

Residents are encouraged to sign up for real-time weather alerts via various apps like the WXII 12 News app, which can deliver notifications directly to users’ devices. In addition, a NOAA weather radio can be programmed to activate with warnings, providing critical information even overnight.

The North Carolina Division of Emergency Management emphasizes the importance of having a plan in place. “Knowing where to go during a tornado warning can save lives,” said Slocum. Recommendations include choosing a basement or an interior room without windows to provide the best shelter.

Tornado safety tips also recommend using protective measures, such as heavy blankets or mattresses, to shield against debris. Those living in mobile homes should abandon them immediately and seek sturdier structures. If no protective buildings are nearby, residents are advised to find a low-lying area, lie flat, and cover their heads.

With a forecast indicating a significant risk for severe thunderstorms and potential tornado activity, monitoring weather patterns and being prepared is crucial. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph are expected, which may cause further hazards.
