Severe Weather Warnings and Flood Alerts Issued Across the UK
As the United Kingdom bids farewell to summer, severe weather warnings have been issued for Sunday and Monday due to the expectation of ‘intense’ thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. The Met Office has cautioned the public to remain alert for local flooding, with warnings that some areas may become isolated due to flooded roads and potential power cuts.
In certain locations, the Met Office predicts rainfall could reach between 60 to 80 millimeters, with some regions possibly experiencing 100 to 120 millimeters or more. An amber warning for rain has been specifically issued for Monday, as indicated in a recent announcement on social media by the Met Office.
Most of England and Wales are under a yellow warning for rain on Monday, except for the far west of Wales and the south-west of England. Notably, the north-east of England and the far north-west are expected to be spared from the harshest conditions. Northern Scotland is anticipated to experience cloudy weather with sporadic rain, according to the Met Office.
Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey remarked, “With Sunday marking the autumnal equinox, summer has now officially come to an end, and it ended with a bang for some of us.” He further explained that a rain warning is in effect throughout Sunday for a band of rain moving across Wales and central southern areas of England, suggesting the potential for surface water issues and travel disruptions.
Flood warnings have also been issued for specific areas. A flood warning is in place for Mill Brook from the Hagbourne Mill area to Winterbrook, where property flooding is expected imminently due to rising river levels. Residents in affected areas, such as Blewbury, have been advised to move possessions to safety and activate flood protection measures.
A flood alert is also active for the River Thames and its tributaries from Days Lock to above Pangbourne. While property flooding is not currently expected, river levels have risen on the Mill Brook, a tributary to the River Thames, due to recent heavy rainfall. Continued heavy rainfall is expected, with river levels potentially rising into the afternoon before stabilizing.
