Severe Weather Warnings Issued as Flood Risk Grows in Massachusetts

Boston, Massachusetts – On Friday at 11:04 a.m., the National Weather Service issued an updated flood watch for Berkshire County. The watch is effective from noon Friday until midnight Saturday, warning of possible flash flooding due to excessive rainfall.
The weather service cautioned, “Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible. Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone areas. Flooding may occur in poorly drained urban locations as well,” the statement said.
A flash flood warning is declared when a flash flood is imminent or occurring. Residents in flood-prone areas should move immediately to higher ground. Flash floods develop rapidly, sometimes within minutes to hours, and can happen even in regions not experiencing rainfall.
The agency emphasizes the importance of safety during potential flooding events, offering essential guidelines for residents: Seek higher ground when in a flood-prone area, adhere to any evacuation orders, and disconnect utilities where possible.
Additionally, the weather service advises individuals to avoid flooded basements or submerged areas and to refrain from walking through floodwaters. Even a small amount of swiftly moving water can pose a serious risk.
During heavy rainfall, particularly in lower-lying areas, flooding risk is elevated. Authorities recommend staying alert and prepared, as even shallow waters can sweep vehicles away. They also advise the public to avoid parking or walking near culverts and drainage ditches during rain events, as these can swiftly fill with rushing water.
As severe thunderstorms swept the region on Friday morning, strong winds caused trees to fall across roads in various areas. While Saturday was initially predicted to be mostly dry, conditions have changed, and more storms are expected throughout the day.
The original weather watch comes as Massachusetts and neighboring states, including New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Vermont, previously experienced severe thunderstorm warnings. With humid conditions persisting, forecasters anticipate that storms could result in localized heavy rainfall and possible strong winds.
The public is encouraged to remain informed and prepared for changing weather conditions and to follow all guidelines from local authorities for safety.
