Severe Wind Storm Hits New Mexico, Warning Issued for Residents

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Strong winds are expected to impact New Mexico tonight and Friday as a powerful cold front moves through the region. Gusty winds will begin late Thursday afternoon, intensifying throughout the state on Friday.
The National Weather Service has issued high wind warnings for eastern and southern New Mexico due to dangerously strong winds. Sustained winds of 40 to 50 mph are anticipated in this area, with gusts possibly reaching up to 80 mph.
“These strong winds can lead to downed trees and power lines, which may result in widespread power outages,” said Chief Meteorologist Joe Diaz during a weather briefing. “There’s also a high risk for blowing dust, particularly in eastern New Mexico, which could make travel hazardous on Friday.”u200B
In Albuquerque, a wind advisory is currently in effect as winds are projected to strengthen overnight, with speeds expected between 30 to 40 mph and gusts as high as 55 mph. Local residents are advised to stay alert for changing weather conditions.
“Conditions will remain challenging through the night,” Diaz added. “Drivers should prepare for reduced visibility due to blowing dust, particularly in open areas and roads exposed to strong winds.”
Additionally, the potential for a snow squall exists overnight into Friday morning, particularly in the northern mountains of the state. A winter weather advisory indicates that 1 to 3 inches of snow could fall, further complicating travel conditions.
“Snowfall mixed with high winds can create very dangerous travel situations,” warned Diaz. “If you must travel, please do so with caution.”
Forecast models suggest that the worst of the wind will continue through the afternoon on Friday, with gusts potentially reaching up to 70 mph in some areas, particularly along the Central Mountain chain.
Diaz explained that the high wind warnings will remain in effect until 6:00 p.m. Friday, as the storm front progresses across the state. After this storm system passes, conditions may improve over the weekend, with temperatures projected to rise and calmer winds anticipated.
Residents are encouraged to check local updates and prepare for possible power outages and travel disruptions as this weather system moves through the area.
As the weekend approaches, another system could bring spotty rain and snow showers, although winds are expected to weaken. Sunday appears to be the most favorable day, while conditions could worsen again next week.
