Strong Winds Blowing Dust New Mexico Texas

MIDLAND, TX – April 1, 2025 – Residents in southeast New Mexico and West Texas are dealing with powerful winds and blowing dust that are escalating fire risks across the region, prompted by a large upper-level weather system, the National Weather Service reported.

A High Wind Warning is in effect until early Wednesday morning for the Guadalupe Mountains, eastern Culberson County, and much of southeast New Mexico. Meanwhile, a Blowing Dust Advisory has been issued until 10 PM CDT for the Permian Basin, Davis Mountains, Marfa Plateau, and Upper Trans Pecos, creating potentially dangerous driving conditions.

“Visibilities could drop rapidly due to blowing dust, and motorists should exercise caution,” warned the National Weather Service representative. “Be particularly careful in open areas and on highways.”

As the system continues to move through the area, thunderstorms are expected to develop over the northeastern Permian Basin tonight, with another wave of storms likely occurring on Wednesday. Rainfall is projected to increase later in the week, particularly in the Guadalupe Mountains and eastern Permian Basin by Thursday.

“While the wind and dust are significant concerns now, we are seeing some promise of rain, which could help alleviate fire risks,” said the NWS spokesperson. “However, cooler temperatures and the possibility of freezing conditions are anticipated over the weekend.”

The community is urged to stay updated on weather advisories and to prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Emergency services are monitoring the situation closely.
