Arizona Winter Storm Snow Weather Forecast

PHOENIX, Ariz. — A series of severe winter storms are forecasted to impact Arizona this week, beginning Thursday afternoon as an area of low pressure moves in from California.

Residents in the West Valley should prepare for significant weather changes, including strong winds and rain. A Blowing Dust Advisory is in effect for Pinal County, with winds expected to gust as high as 45 mph through the afternoon and evening. The National Weather Service warns of possible blowing dust and hazardous driving conditions.

As the system approaches, cloudy skies will dominate the afternoon, with a 90% chance of rain, especially during the evening. Accumulations of rainfall may reach up to three-fourths of an inch, particularly in isolated areas. Thunderstorms are also anticipated, adding to the severity of the storm.

In the high country, areas above 5,000 feet are set to receive much-needed snowfall. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning, valid until 5 a.m. Friday, predicting snow accumulations of 8 to 12 inches, particularly challenging travel conditions.

“With up to 55 mph wind gusts expected in the mountains, travel will be very difficult, especially during the evening commute,” said a National Weather Service representative.

Communities like Forest Lakes could see accumulations of 12 to 18 inches, while Flagstaff might register 6 to 10 inches, Prescott 2 to 4 inches, and Payson 1 to 3 inches. Travelers are advised to use caution due to slick roads and decreased visibility.

After a brief lull in the storm Friday, another wave of light rain and snow is forecasted to arrive Friday night. This second system may bring additional snowfall to higher elevations and raise rain chances in the Valley to approximately 40%.

The weekend will see improvements as a ridge of high pressure builds over the region, bringing sunny skies and warmer temperatures. Sunday’s high is expected to reach 75 degrees, with Monday potentially hitting 81 degrees.

However, forecasters are monitoring the chance for additional rain next Tuesday, although current predictions indicate slim chances. “We’ll keep you updated as the situation changes,” the meteorologists stated.
