Severe Winter Weather Hits Oneida County with Snow and Ice Warnings

VERONA, N.Y. — A Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect until 1 AM EST Saturday for Northern and Southern Oneida counties, with a Winter Storm Watch expected to follow from Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening. The National Weather Service warns of heavy lake effect snow, predicting additional accumulations between 3 and 8 inches, and locally up to 10 inches near Sylvan Beach and Verona.
According to the warning, significant snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are anticipated this morning along and just south of the New York Thruway corridor. As conditions worsen, snowfall will be mixed with sleet and freezing rain Saturday night, transitioning back to snow or snow showers on late Sunday afternoon and evening.
The potential for power outages and tree damage from ice is considerable, especially impacting travel. These hazardous conditions could disrupt Friday morning and evening commutes, as well as Saturday’s activities.
Motorists are urged to exercise caution and avoid travel during adverse weather conditions. Authorities recommend that travelers keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in their vehicles in case of emergencies. For the latest road conditions, individuals should call 511 for updates.
Residents should remain alert to rapidly changing weather, visibility, and road conditions. During lake effect snow, localized heavy snowfall can occur only a few miles from dry conditions, making it essential to stay informed on current weather developments.
