Oklahoma City, OK — At just 27 years old, reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is enjoying his time at the top of the NBA. The star guard led the Oklahoma City Thunder to a remarkable 68-14 record last season, clinching the MVP award and guiding the team to a championship, the franchise’s second and first since its move from Seattle in 2008. He was also named NBA Finals MVP for his performance against the Indiana Pacers.

As he prepares for the 2025-26 season, Gilgeous-Alexander reflects on his journey alongside a young core featuring teammates like Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren. However, in a recent GQ interview, he tempered expectations regarding a long career in professional basketball.

When questioned about potential longevity in the league, especially in light of players like LeBron James and Chris Paul, Gilgeous-Alexander was candid about his intentions. “I definitely think I can,” he stated, “I won’t, though. A hundred percent.”

The reason for his stance revolves around his family life. Gilgeous-Alexander and his wife, Hailey Summers, welcomed their son, Ares, in April 2024. “I won’t want to miss that much of my kid’s life,” he explained. He emphasized the significance of being there for Ares’s early milestones, including sports games and activities.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s perspective reflects a broader conversation among NBA veterans about family sacrifices. Chris Paul returned to the Los Angeles Clippers this season partly to reconnect with his family, acknowledging the difficulties of missing important moments in his children’s lives.

In addition to family considerations, Gilgeous-Alexander expressed his thoughts on his performance. “There’s a certain point in your career where you reach your peak,” he explained. He believes that, once he identifies his best level of play, he will step back from the sport. “As soon as that happens, I’ll be on the first ship out,” he stated.

While longevity may be a priority for many, Gilgeous-Alexander seems resolute in avoiding a decline in his abilities. Fans of the Thunder hope he remains a cornerstone of the franchise for years to come. When asked if he envisions retiring by his mid-30s, he replied, “There’s no telling. But I promise you it won’t be 40.”
