Thou Shalt Not Steal Tv Series

The new Stan Original series, “Thou Shalt Not Steal,” directed by Dylan River, has captivated audiences with its darkly comedic approach to storytelling. Set against the picturesque backdrop of 1980s outback Australia, this eight-episode series brings to life the tale of a teenage delinquent on the run, who is as defiant as she is charming.

The show is co-created by River alongside executive producer Tanith Glynn-Maloney, and the narrative revolves around the character Robyn, portrayed by newcomer Sherry-Lee Watson, who breaks out of detention. Her quest introduces viewers to a vibrant cast of characters and an irreverent storyline encased in a swift 30-minute episode format. From the outset, with Robyn’s witty critique of missionaries who condemn theft, the show promises an audacious ride set “in the middle of bumfuck nowhere,” as Robyn describes it.

Miranda Otto returns to the screen as Maxine, a former sex worker now driving a taxi, who becomes entangled in Robyn’s escapades. Otto, in an exclusive interview, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, citing River’s distinctive comedic style that blends traditional Australian wit with a contemporary twist. “Maxine is quite driven, a little deadly. We meet her as a taxi driver, but soon realize there’s much more to her,” Otto noted, highlighting the character’s complexity.

The visual aesthetic of “Thou Shalt Not Steal” is equally engaging. Cinematographer Tyson Perkins captures the stunning yet harsh landscapes of Alice Springs, Coober Pedy, Port Lincoln, and Adelaide, crafting a burnt, dusty palette that echoes classic Western films. The soundtrack, a mix of country and gospel with a nod to Tarantino-esque retro beats, sets the tone for this nonconformist drama.

Robyn’s journey involves reconnecting with her heritage and family history, including meeting her estranged father. The narrative is propelled by engaging performances from actors like Noah Taylor, who plays the unscrupulous pastor Robert, and Will McDonald, who portrays Robyn’s partner in crime, Gidge. Otto praised her co-stars, emphasizing Watson’s standout performance, saying, “It was so nice to have such a strong female voice in the show. Sherry-Lee does a fabulous job.”

The combination of a nostalgic 1980s setting with a distinctive Australian humor promises viewers a unique viewing experience. Otto warns that missing this series would leave you out of the loop, challenging audiences to engage with this compelling narrative. “It’s got this really cool look and such a different style of humour. I think people will be blown away,” she concluded.

“Thou Shalt Not Steal” debuts exclusively on Stan today, offering a fresh and exhilarating take on classic outback storytelling.
