SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Sharks are seeing some signs of improvement as they navigate the early weeks of the NHL season. After defeating the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday, the Sharks now hold a record of 4-6-3, placing them with 11 points, three points shy of a wild card spot in the crowded Western Conference.

Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky expressed optimism about the team’s performance. ‘The confidence is coming, and the belief is coming. We can get a lot better,’ he noted. Warsofsky believes that with continued effort and consistency, the Sharks can enhance their game further as the season progresses.

However, the Sharks are facing potential roster challenges. Currently, the team has eight defensemen on the active roster. Nick Leddy, who practiced with the Sharks last week, may make his return soon, prompting the team to consider clearing a roster spot. Options include placing Vincent Iorio on waivers or moving a defenseman on an entry-level contract.

Another concern is regarding Sam Dickinson, a rookie defenseman who recently played his ninth game with the Sharks. If he suits up for a 10th game, it would activate the first year of his entry-level contract, complicating the Sharks’ roster situation further.

In the forward lineup, rookie Michael Misa is under scrutiny as he approaches his 10th NHL game, which would also initiate his contract year. Misa has contributed three points in his last five games, displaying promising potential.

The Sharks have also been highlighting the offensive capabilities of their young stars, such as Will Smith, who is expected to deliver big performances following successful contract negotiations with other players in the league.

Recent statistics show that the Sharks have improved their goaltending performance, with Alex Nedeljkovic and Yaroslav Askarov combining for a .940 save percentage over the last three games. Nedeljkovic notably saved 58 of 62 shots in recent matchups against teams like the New Jersey Devils and Colorado Avalanche.

Looking ahead, the Sharks have a challenging week against teams at the top of their divisions, including the Central Division-leading Colorado Avalanche and the Atlantic Division-leading Detroit Red Wings. As the Sharks prepare for these matchups, they remain hopeful about further developing their young roster and seeking more victories this season.
