Shelley Luther Wins Texas House Seat, Backs Texas Secession
Shelley Luther, a prominent figure in Texas politics, has secured a victory in the recent elections, winning a seat in the Texas House of Representatives. Luther, who gained national attention for defying COVID-19 shutdown orders as the owner of a Dallas salon, was elected to represent House District 62.
Luther’s win is part of a broader trend that saw 10 Republican candidates who support Texas seeking independence from the U.S. elected to the state House. These candidates, including Luther, signed the “Texas First Pledge” initiated by the Texas Nationalist Movement (TNM). This pledge commits them to voting for legislation and resolutions aimed at calling for a referendum on Texas reasserting its independence and working towards a separation from the federal government if approved by Texans.
Luther’s stance on Texas secession aligns with the TNM’s goals, which include advocating for policy initiatives that would move Texas closer to functioning as an independent nation. This includes issues related to the border, currency, and other structural and operational aspects that would facilitate separation from the U.S..
Her election victory is seen as a significant milestone by the TNM, which described the outcomes as a “revolution in Texas politics.” Despite the historical and legal hurdles, including the U.S. Constitution’s lack of provisions for state secession, the movement has gained momentum in recent years.
