Sheppard AFB Investigates Shots-Fired Call, No Active Shooter Found
WICHITA FALLS, Texas — On November 21, Sheppard Air Force Base issued an alert instructing personnel to take shelter due to reports of an active shooter near Sheppard Elementary School.
Schools in the area, including Sheppard Elementary and John G. Tower Elementary, were placed on temporary lockdown following a shots-fired call. Security forces immediately secured the schools to protect students and staff while multiple patrols searched the surrounding area.
According to the Wichita Falls Independent School District, there were reports of sounds resembling gunfire in the housing area near the campus. However, officials later clarified that there was no indication of an active shooter on the base.
“Update on Sheppard Elementary. Out of an abundance of caution, Sheppard Elementary is in Secure status after staff reported sounds consistent with gunfire,” the district’s statement read. It explained that during the investigation, students and staff would remain indoors and continue instruction, with exterior doors secured.
As the situation unfolded, local news sources, including KAUZ and KFDX-TV, reported a heavy police presence near the McKinley area. A witness, claiming to have family working at the air force base, confirmed the lockdown status. “I have family working on Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, TX. They’re on lockdown right now for an active shooter near the elementary school,” the source said.
Although the alert caused concern in the community, officials advised that there is no immediate threat. “Lord protect everyone!” said one resident, while others shared their prayers for safety. In the end, the base ensured that security measures were implemented until the situation was resolved.
The investigation into the reported shots-fired call is ongoing.
