A deeply disturbing case has resurfaced in the spotlight with the release of the new Netflix documentary ‘What Jennifer Did’. The documentary, directed by Jenny Popplewell, unravels the twisted tale of Jennifer Pan, a young woman whose elaborate web of lies led to a heinous crime.

Born to Vietnamese immigrants, Huei Hann and Bich Ha Pan, Jennifer was raised under tremendous pressure to excel in academics and extracurriculars. Her parents, driven by high expectations, crafted a strict environment for her and her brother, Felix, to thrive in.

Jennifer initially painted the picture of an exemplary student at Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School in Markham, where she excelled in academics and music, nurturing aspirations of becoming an Olympic figure skater. However, her dreams took a detour following a devastating injury in the eighth grade.

Struggling with the weight of her parents’ expectations, Jennifer’s facade of success began to crumble. Her academic performance declined, leading her to resort to deceit. Altering her report cards with forged grades became a common practice as she strived to maintain the illusion of excellence.

Amidst her academic decline, Jennifer ventured into a forbidden romance with Daniel Wong, a controversial figure her parents disapproved of vehemently. Concealing her relationship from her parents, Jennifer delved deeper into deception, fabricating stories of successful university admissions and scholarships.

The intricate facade shattered on November 8, 2010, when Jennifer orchestrated a chilling plot to eliminate her parents through hired hitmen, resulting in a fatal attack that claimed her mother’s life. Unraveling in court, the case exposed a web of lies and betrayal that Jennifer had meticulously woven over the years.

Facing charges of first-degree murder, along with Wong and the hired assailants, Jennifer’s conviction sent shockwaves through the community. The subsequent legal proceedings, including the Court of Appeal for Ontario‘s recent ruling for a new trial, continue to shed light on the sinister depths of this harrowing saga.
