Harvest Homecoming Indiana Shooting

A tragic shooting occurred during the Harvest Homecoming event in New Albany, Indiana, resulting in the death of an 18-year-old high school student named Bryce Gerlach. The incident took place on Saturday, October 12, around 9:50 p.m. local time.

According to the New Albany Police Department, Gerlach was among three individuals struck by gunfire, the others being a 22-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman, both of whom sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to the hospital. The police identified the victims as “innocent bystanders,” with Gerlach being pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Chief Todd Bailey mentioned during a press conference that the preliminary investigation suggested a dispute between two groups led to the shooting. Authorities have identified several persons of interest but have not confirmed any arrests.

Gerlach was a senior at Corydon Central High School and a member of the varsity football team. His classmates and coaches remember him for his leadership and selflessness. Several of his peers believe he died a hero, shielding others from harm during the chaos.

“It was very selfless what he did,” said Tanner Chumly, a friend of Gerlach’s. “And I’m thankful he went out in such a heroic way because that’s what he was. He was a hero.”

The incident has deeply affected the Corydon Central High community. In tribute to Gerlach, students wore blue, his favorite color, during a match against Silver Creek High School. Bryce’s younger brother, Owen Gerlach, honored his late brother by donning his No. 12 jersey during the game’s senior night on Friday.

New Albany Mayor Jeff Gahan extended condolences to Gerlach’s family, expressing the need for the community to unite against gun violence. “Gun violence at a family festival is heartbreaking and tragic,” he said in a statement.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Authorities urged anyone with additional information to assist with the investigation as they continue to pursue leads.
