INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — A shooting on Indianapolis’ southwest side late Sunday night has left one man in critical condition. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. near Kentucky Avenue and Heathrow Way, prompting a swift response from police.

Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) arrived shortly after reports of gunfire and found a male victim outside a nearby building with a gunshot wound. He was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Following the investigation initiated by IMPD, authorities arrested 27-year-old Albert Ayala on preliminary charges of aggravated battery. The arrest was confirmed by police as the investigation continues into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

“The investigation is still ongoing, and we are working to gather all the evidence necessary,” said a spokesperson for IMPD. “We will not release additional information until all details are verified.”

Detectives worked the scene where the shooting occurred, as well as the hospital, conducting witness interviews and collecting evidence. One witness reported hearing gunshots and seeing the victim flee towards them, while another witness described a white pickup truck with dual rear-wheel tires speeding away from the area.

Authorities are currently investigating the connection, if any, between the truck and the shooting. Meanwhile, police have said they are exploring potential motives for the attack but have not released further details.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will determine final charges in the case as the investigation proceeds. Local news outlets report that suspects are generally not named until formal charges are filed.

The shooting incident adds to the ongoing concerns about gun violence in the area. As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist in the inquiry.
