Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival Shooting Scene

PONCHATOULA, La. — A shooting on Saturday evening at the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival has resulted in two injuries, prompting a temporary early closure of the event. The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed that one victim is hospitalized with a stomach injury, while the second victim is undergoing treatment for a graze wound.

The incident disrupted what had been a lively celebration at the festival, which is known for its community spirit and family-friendly activities. The sheriff’s office announced the festival would close early Saturday, before resuming operations Sunday with revised hours.

According to festival organizers, activities will begin with a church service at 9 a.m. on Sunday, followed by the opening of rides at 10 a.m. However, the festival is set to conclude at 5 p.m., earlier than the originally planned 7 p.m. closure.

“Due to an unfortunate incident that occurred on our grounds and for the safety of our guests, the festival closed early tonight,” festival officials stated. “We want to thank everyone for their understanding and cooperation. We are so thankful for the Ponchatoula Police Department, Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the 10+ other agencies that secured our grounds efficiently and quickly.”

Throughout the duration of the festival on Sunday, law enforcement, including personnel from the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office and various assisting agencies, will remain present, patrolling the grounds and surrounding areas.

“While we pray for the recovery of those injured, we vow to hold accountable those responsible for ruining what has, so far, been an exceptional weekend,” the statement from the sheriff’s office read. “We hope those who were planning to visit this event and community Sunday keep those plans, and that everyone practices patience and respect for all present, especially the hundreds of families with young children just trying to enjoy the beautiful weather at a treasured tradition.”

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and further details concerning a suspect and potential motive have not yet been disclosed. Updates will be provided by the Ponchatoula Police Department as the situation develops.
