Union Station Shooting Crime Scene Investigation

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A shooting outside the Union Station parking garage resulted in the death of a man on Monday afternoon, just before 5 p.m. The shooter remains at large, and police have confirmed that it was not an active shooter situation.

The incident occurred near the escalator leading to the parking garage, according to an Amtrak spokesperson. Initially, police reported that the shooting took place within the station itself. Witnesses state that the victim, who has yet to be identified, ran inside after being shot but collapsed at the bottom of the escalator. First responders performed CPR at the scene, but the man succumbed to his injuries.

During a press conference, Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela A. Smith stated that the victim and the shooter appeared to know each other. Prior to the shooting, they walked together and appeared to have a conversation. Video footage suggests that the victim attempted to take something from the shooter just before the deadly altercation.

“The decedent grabs something off of the person of the shooting suspect, and then the shooting suspect begins to return fire,” said Chief Smith. “The decedent runs out of the waiting area, collapses at the escalator, and falls down.” There is currently no information available regarding the motive, though police do not believe the shooting was random.

Law enforcement officials are actively working to obtain clearer images of the suspect from surveillance footage. It was reported that around four people were present in the vicinity during the shooting, but none were harmed.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the scene, which remains cordoned off, while Amtrak has indicated that operations at Union Station have not been affected. The investigation is ongoing, and no further details about the identity of the victim or the shooter have been released.

This incident has raised concerns, but officials assure that there is no existing threat within Union Station, a major transportation, retail, and dining hub in the area. Police encourage anyone with information related to the shooting to come forward.
