I 80 Mercer County Snow Crash Traffic

MERCER COUNTY, Pa. — A stretch of Interstate 80 in Mercer County was shut down Tuesday evening following multiple crashes caused by heavy snowfall, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

The closure affected a seven-mile section of the interstate between mile markers 4 and 11. Authorities also imposed a 45-mile-per-hour speed restriction on I-80 from the Ohio state line to Exit 45 (Route 478, St. Petersburg/Emlenton) due to hazardous driving conditions.

Traffic cameras showed the road was cleared and reopened by approximately 11 p.m. The crashes occurred as a winter storm swept through western Pennsylvania, bringing heavy snow and reduced visibility.

Pennsylvania State Police urged drivers to exercise caution and adhere to speed limits during the storm. “The combination of snow and high traffic volume created dangerous conditions,” a spokesperson said. “We’re asking everyone to slow down and allow extra time for travel.”

No injuries or fatalities were immediately reported in connection with the crashes. The incident highlights the challenges of winter driving in the region, where snowstorms frequently disrupt travel.

Local officials advised residents to monitor weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for the area, predicting additional snowfall and icy roads overnight.
