Simcoe County Raises ‘Every Child Matters’ Flag for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
In a solemn ceremony, the County of Simcoe raised the ‘Every Child Matters‘ flag at the County Administration Office in Midhurst to commemorate Orange Shirt Day on September 30. This act supports the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day dedicated to acknowledging the impact of the residential school system in Canada.
Warden Basil Clarke officially proclaimed September 30 as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Simcoe County. “National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day are important reminders of our collective responsibility to acknowledge the painful history of residential schools and honour the resilience of our Indigenous communities,” Clarke stated. He emphasized the importance of wearing orange, which serves as a symbol of reflection and commitment to healing and fostering respect and understanding.
The county’s initiative aims to honor those affected by the residential school system, recognizing the ongoing struggle and suffering endured by Indigenous children, families, and communities. It is a gesture that underscores the commitment to support their healing journey and acknowledges the systemic and interpersonal anti-Indigenous racism that persists in Canadian society.
