Simon Bird Dismisses Possibility of The Inbetweeners Reunion
Simon Bird, renowned for his role as Will McKenzie in the celebrated comedy series The Inbetweeners, has clarified that there will be no reunion or reboot of the show. Despite fan anticipation and ongoing speculation about the return of the beloved series, Bird has stated that there are no current discussions about new projects.
The original series, which followed the antics of four British teenage boys, aired from 2008 to 2010 and was followed by two successful films in 2011 and 2014. While fans have held out hope for a revival featuring the original cast, Bird has poured cold water on these hopes, citing scheduling conflicts as a major issue. He remarked, “I’m afraid to be the one pouring cold water on this, but it’s not happening. It’s up to the writers, and Iain Morris and Damon Beesley are both very busy these days.”
Reflecting on the show, Bird emphasized that it captured a specific time period in comedy. While he appreciates the continued interest from audiences, he expressed concern that a reunion could detract from the show’s legacy. “What was funny about these characters was the stage of life they were at,” he commented, suggesting that revisiting the characters as adults might not have the same comedic effect.
Bird also acknowledged that times have changed since The Inbetweeners originally aired, noting issues such as sexism and casual homophobia that were depicted in the series. He questioned whether such content would resonate with today’s audiences.
The actor, who has moved on to other roles in shows like Friday Night Dinner, stated that while the show was a significant part of his career, he rarely revisits it and doesn’t remember much of the iconic dialogue that fans often quote.
James Buckley, Bird’s former castmate, also expressed reluctance about revisiting the series after a reunion special turned out to be poorly received. Buckley apologised for the reunion’s outcome and stated he does not desire to revisit the series after the experience.
