Skimmers Found at Two Giant Eagle Stores in Pennsylvania
MCKEESPORT, Pa. — Credit card skimming devices were discovered at two Giant Eagle grocery stores in the Pittsburgh area, potentially compromising customer payment information, the company confirmed Thursday.
The skimmers were found at the Greenfield and McKeesport locations in late December and removed the same day they were installed, according to a Giant Eagle spokesperson. The company notified customers who may have had their information stolen but did not disclose how many people were affected.
“We have multiple security measures in place to limit the risk of customers having their identities stolen,” the spokesperson said. However, they declined to specify whether the devices were placed on self-checkout lanes or full-service lanes.
Authorities are investigating whether the same individual or group installed the skimmers at both locations. If customers swiped their cards at the compromised terminals, the devices could have captured their card information and PIN codes via the magnetic strip.
Giant Eagle has not released additional details about the ongoing investigation but urged customers to monitor their bank accounts for suspicious activity. The company also emphasized its commitment to customer security and encouraged shoppers to report any unusual behavior at checkout terminals.
