Smith & Wesson Revives Classic No Internal Lock Revolvers

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Smith & Wesson has launched its new Classic No Internal Lock series, reviving three iconic revolvers without the controversial internal lock feature added in 2001. The Model 36, Model 10, and Model 19 are now available for fans of traditional firearms.
The announcement comes as part of the company’s commitment to meeting consumer preferences by emphasizing simplicity in design. The internal locking mechanism, often criticized by enthusiasts, has been eliminated, restoring the models to their original form. These revolvers are perfect for those looking for a reliable backup handgun.
The Model 36, originally introduced in 1950 as the “Chief’s Special,” features a smooth double-action trigger pull and a fixed round front sight designed for better aiming. Despite being limited to a five-round capacity of .38 Special +P, the compact revolver remains a favorite among concealed carry advocates. Its 2-inch barrel length may compromise some velocity, but helps maintain a low profile.
The Model 10 offers a longer 4-inch tapered barrel and improved grip texture from the retro styling of the Victory series. This model incorporates refinements that result in a dependable double-action trigger. Both the Model 36 and Model 10 share compatibility with legacy speedloaders, ensuring convenient reloading options for daily carry.
Most notable in this launch is the Model 19, known for its versatility and configuration. Whether using it for home defense or sport shooting, the Model 19 can accommodate both .38 Special and .357 Magnum cartridges. Its adjustable sights enhance accuracy, making it suitable for a range of applications, while the use of a two-piece barrel allows for easy maintenance.
Smith & Wesson has deliberately retained traditional elements while introducing modern improvements. With no internal lock complication, these Revolvers appeal to both collectors and everyday users alike, bringing back a nostalgic piece of firearms history without sacrificing functionality.
The price for the new Classic No Internal Lock models ranges from $850 to $1,100. Smith & Wesson’s decision to eliminate the internal lock aligns with growing consumer preferences for simplicity in revolver design.
