SNL 50th Anniversary Celebrations Kick Off with Specials and Reruns
NEW YORK, N.Y. — As Saturday Night Live (SNL) marks its 50th anniversary in 2025, the iconic sketch comedy show has launched a series of special events, documentaries, and reruns to celebrate five decades of laughter. The festivities began with a re-airing of the November 2, 2024, episode hosted by comedian John Mulaney, which aired on January 11, 2025, during the show’s post-holiday break.
The November 2 episode, which originally featured Mulaney as host and Chappell Roan as musical guest, showcased Mulaney’s signature humor, including a stand-up monologue about fatherhood and aging. The episode also featured a new installment of Mulaney’s recurring sketch series, set in a Port Authority Duane Reade, and a poignant pretape about a monkey astronaut. Roan performed her hit “Pink Pony Club” and debuted a new country-tinged track, “The Giver.”
The 50th-anniversary celebrations include a four-part docuseries, SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, which premieres on Peacock on January 16. Executive-produced by Morgan Neville, the series offers rare behind-the-scenes footage, celebrity interviews, and reflections from over 60 former cast members and writers. On January 27, NBC will air a documentary co-directed by Questlove and Oz Rodriguez, focusing on the show’s musical guests over the years.
The anniversary festivities will culminate in a three-hour primetime special, SNL50: The Anniversary Special, airing live on NBC and Peacock on February 16. The event promises to highlight the show’s most memorable sketches, cast members, hosts, and musical performances from the past 50 years.
Fans can also revisit all 50 seasons of SNL on Peacock, with new episodes resuming on January 18, 2025, featuring host [Name TBD] and musical guest GloRilla. Until then, the show continues its celebration with reruns and exclusive content, ensuring that the legacy of SNL remains as vibrant as ever.
