Snow Squall Warning Issued for Multiple Kansas Counties
TOPEKA, Kansas (WIBW) – The National Weather Service has issued a snow squall warning for several counties in the region. This warning follows a snow squall that was identified approximately seven miles north of Volland at 1:38 p.m. The squall is moving eastward.
A snow squall is characterized by heavy snow and strong winds, causing low visibility on roads. Locations potentially affected include Topeka, Rossville, Alma, Dover, Silver Lake, Auburn, Maple Hill, McFarland, Paxico, Willard, Pauline, Keene, and Volland.
Travelers in these areas are advised to be alert and cautious. The National Weather Service emphasizes the importance of staying updated. Snow squalls are severe and can develop quickly, creating dangerous driving conditions within minutes.
As part of the ongoing weather alerts, additional regions in Michigan also experienced a snow squall earlier. This warning, which affected several Southeast Michigan counties including Wayne and Oakland, was initially set to expire at 11:15 a.m. but was later extended due to the hazardous conditions.
Authorities warn that these short-lived but intense winter weather events can lead to sudden whiteout conditions and dangerous roadways, which have historically resulted in accidents, including fatalities. Drivers are urged to reduce speeds and use low beams and hazard lights when encountering a snow squall.
Safety protocols suggest pulling over if the conditions become too dangerous to navigate. Snow squalls can lead to difficult driving situations due to rapid changes in visibility and road conditions.
