Snowfall and Arctic Air Forecast: Wintry Weekend Ahead for Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — A weather system moving through Indiana overnight has brought light accumulations of snow across the northern half of the state, with some areas seeing up to 3 inches. Starting Sunday morning, isolated patches of 1 to 2 inches are expected, particularly as additional precipitation arrives this evening.
Rain showers lingered in the morning, especially in the southern part of the state, before transitioning to snow. Accumulations for most areas south of the Interstate 70 corridor are forecasted to be under 1 inch, while those near Lake Michigan might see slightly higher totals depending on localized snow bands.
“The wintry mix will gradually change over to all snow before daybreak Sunday,” said a meteorologist from WTHR. “Conditions will get colder as temperatures drop near freezing in the early hours of the morning.”
The system is expected to move out by mid-morning, but residents are cautioned about hazardous travel conditions due to strong winds and potential blowing snow. Northwest wind gusts may reach up to 40 mph, exacerbating the effects of any accumulated snow.
Following the snow, temperatures will fall into the upper 20s during the day. The winter weather advisory remains in effect until 7 PM Sunday, highlighting when travel impacts will be most significant.
As the cold front moves in after the initial precipitation, temperatures are set to plummet overnight, dipping into the single digits by Monday morning. Wind chill values could reach as low as -5 degrees.
The upcoming work week is expected to feature dangerously low temperatures, with highs only in the teens, while overnight lows may stay around zero. Forecasters also indicate another potential round of light snowfall could occur between Tuesday night and Thursday morning.
Residents are reminded to prepare for frigid conditions and to exercise caution while traveling during these wintry weather periods.
