Social Security Delays and Adjustments for June 2025

Washington, D.C. — As June 2025 begins, millions of Americans are attentively checking their mailboxes and bank accounts, expecting their Social Security benefits. Over 70 million people rely on these payments, and any delays or adjustments can create anxiety.
This month, the fundamental payment schedule for Social Security will remain unchanged. Payments will be distributed on a staggered basis, depending on recipients’ birth dates. Those born before May 1997 or who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will be paid first on June 3. Payments for others will occur on June 12 for those born between the 1st and 10th, on June 18 for those born between the 11th and 20th (including a delay due to Juneteenth), and on June 25 for those born between the 21st and 31st.
However, notable changes alongside this schedule should catch the attention of two groups. New applicants for retirement or disability benefits are experiencing longer wait times. According to the Social Security Administration (SSA), staffing shortages and increased application volumes are causing delays (SSA.gov, May 2025).
Additionally, some current SSI and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) recipients are seeing revised payment amounts this month. These modifications are a result of regular income eligibility reviews, with the SSA notifying all affected individuals (Forbes, May 2025).
An important change also involves the return of student loan garnishments. Under the Debt Collection Improvement Act, the federal government may deduct up to 15% from monthly Social Security payments for those in default on federal student loans, although payments cannot drop below $750 (U.S. Treasury Dept).
This garnishment policy significantly impacts seniors and disabled recipients, especially those unaware they remain responsible for old loans. If you are worried about expected payments being missed or reduced, it is crucial to remain informed and proactive in managing your financial health.
