February Social Security Payments Shift Due to Weekend Dates
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Millions of Social Security beneficiaries will see a slight adjustment to their February payment schedule due to the first of the month falling on a weekend. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments, typically distributed on the first, will instead be sent out on Friday, January 31, 2025.
The shift is a result of February 1 landing on a Saturday, prompting the Social Security Administration (SSA) to issue payments a day early. A similar adjustment occurred in November 2024, when December payments were distributed early due to the first falling on a Sunday.
SSI payments are distributed monthly to low-income seniors, individuals with blindness, or those with qualifying disabilities. Approximately 5 million Americans receive SSI, with an additional 1.5 million receiving both SSI and Social Security benefits. As of December 2024, about 65 million Americans rely on Social Security payments.
For 2025, the maximum monthly SSI benefit increased to $967 for individuals and $1,450 for couples, up from $943 and $1,415, respectively, in 2024. This adjustment reflects a 2.5% cost-of-living increase (COLA), slightly lower than the 3.2% increase in 2024 but consistent with the 20-year average of 2.6%.
Social Security retirement and disability beneficiaries will also see their payments adjusted based on their birthdates. Those who filed claims after May 1, 1997, receive payments on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of the month. Beneficiaries who began receiving payments before May 1997 have a fixed payment date.
If payments are not received on the scheduled date, the SSA advises contacting your bank or financial institution first. For further assistance, beneficiaries can call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or visit their local Social Security office.
