Sonic the Hedgehog is set to return to the big screen with an exciting new installment in the franchise, titled Sonic the Hedgehog 3. A trailer for the film has recently been released, showcasing the popular video game character Shadow, who first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2 in 2001.

The trailer features a narration that highlights Shadow’s contrasting journey compared to Sonic, stating, “Shadow’s story began a lot like yours, Sonic, but where you found family and friends, Shadow found only pain and loss.” This sets the tone for the film, which aims to delve deeper into the characters’ backgrounds.

At CinemaCon in April, Paramount Pictures provided a sneak peek of Sonic 3, revealing that the events of Sonic 2 have left the antagonist Dr. Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey, in a depressed state. The film will explore his comeback as he creates Shadow to confront Sonic, who is once again voiced by Ben Schwartz.

The Sonic franchise saw enormous success in 2020 with its first film grossing $319 million worldwide, making it a standout title during the pandemic era. The sequel, Sonic 2, achieved even greater financial success, bringing in $404 million globally.

Directed by Jeff Fowler, Sonic 3 reunites Schwartz with James Marsden, who plays Tom Wachowski, Sonic’s human friend. The film also features Idris Elba reprising his role as Knuckles, following his debut in Sonic 2, and expands upon his character in the upcoming Paramount+ series, Knuckles.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is scheduled for release in theaters on December 20, providing fans with an exciting addition to the beloved franchise.
