South Africa Struggles on Day One of Second Test in Guwahati
Guwahati, India – South Africa ended day one at 247 for six in the second Test against India on November 22. The Indian bowlers, especially Kuldeep Yadav with 3 wickets for 48 runs, dominated the day, reducing South Africa’s hopes after a promising start.
Temba Bavuma, South Africa’s captain, scored 41 runs but fell victim to a missed opportunity when he attempted a lofted drive and was caught by Yashasvi Jaiswal. His dismissal came after a partnership of 84 runs with Tristan Stubbs, who contributed 49 runs before also falling to Kuldeep’s cunning bowling.
Stubbs, playing his first significant innings in the series, showcased his batting skills but lost his wicket after chasing a delivery from Kuldeep that was angled across him. KL Rahul took the catch at first slip, amplifying the pressure on South Africa.
After Bavuma’s dismissal, Wiaan Mulder quickly followed suit as Kuldeep picked up a third wicket, leading South Africa from 166 for 2 to 201 for 5. Mohammed Siraj then took the final wicket of the day, dismissing Tony de Zorzi for 28 runs.
The pitch at Barsapara Stadium proved challenging for batters, offering some lateral movement. Yet, South Africa’s batsmen struggled to convert their starts into bigger scores. Aiden Markram was 38 runs when he fell prey to a foolish drive off Jasprit Bumrah just before tea.
Notable performances included Ravindra Jadeja‘s dismissal of Bavuma and Kuldeep’s control throughout the innings. Despite some good partnerships, South Africa’s top order failed to capitalize on their time at the crease, which could pose a problem as the match progresses.
At the end of the day, South Africa will reflect on what could have been after surviving early pressure but losing ground through poor shot selection and timely Indian bowling. They need to regroup before continuing on day two.
