South Carolina State University Campus Shooting

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — South Carolina State University is on lockdown following reports of gunfire from Hugine Suites on Saturday night. The university’s Department of Public Safety confirmed the shooting, which prompted immediate campus safety measures.

In an alert issued to the community, officials urged residents of Hugine Suites who were not in the building to report to the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. Those inside the residence hall were instructed to stay put, while students in other residence halls were advised to return to their rooms. Off-campus residents were asked to leave university grounds.

The Homecoming concert scheduled for the evening was canceled due to the incident. Campus police are actively investigating the situation, and South Carolina‘s Law Enforcement Division has been called in to assist.

A statement from the State Law Enforcement Division confirmed they are looking into the matter and will provide more information as the investigation unfolds. As of now, no injuries have been reported.

U.S. Congresswoman from South Carolina expressed her concern via social media, saying, “Praying for everyone at South Carolina State University tonight. Please stay safe and follow law enforcement instructions.” Senator Tim Scott also commented, saying his office is “closely monitoring the situation” and offering prayers for safety on campus.
