MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Spirit Airlines will discontinue service in Milwaukee and three other cities as part of its restructuring plan, effective January 8, 2026. The airline confirmed the decision to FOX6 News on Tuesday.

Spirit Airlines officials stated that the airline is adjusting its 2026 schedule to better align with a smaller operating fleet and focus on more profitable markets. This difficult decision includes not only the discontinuation of service at Milwaukee (MKE), but also at Phoenix (PHX), Rochester (ROC), and St. Louis (STL).

In a written statement, a Spirit spokesperson said, “We apologize to our Guests for any inconvenience and will reach out to those with affected travel plans to notify them of their options, including a refund.” The airline will also stop seasonal service to Bucaramanga, Colombia (BGA), on January 13, 2026.

Spirit’s decision comes amid ongoing restructuring efforts as the airline operates under Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Notably, Spirit had 10,235 passengers at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport in September, a significant drop of 55% compared to the same month in 2024.

A spokesperson for Sky Harbor expressed disappointment over Spirit’s departure, stating, “We understand this may be disappointing news for our community and travelers who rely on their service. Passengers with bookings beyond that date will receive a full refund from the airline.” The spokesperson added that they appreciate the service Spirit has provided to Phoenix over the years.
