Spirit Airlines Under Fire for Dress Code Enforcement at LAX
Two women from Orange County, California, allege they were removed from a Spirit Airlines flight departing from Los Angeles International Airport due to their attire. The incident occurred on a recent Friday as the women were attempting to board a flight to New Orleans.
According to Tara, one of the women involved, the issue arose when a flight attendant informed them that their clothing was deemed inappropriate for the airline, described as a “family-friendly airline.” Tara mentioned that the altercation did not escalate beyond a request for clarification on the airline’s dress code.
Carla Hager, a fellow passenger traveling with her toddler, interjected in defense of the women. Hager told KCAL News, “I thought that was inhumane and I said something.” She described the inconvenience she faced following her removal from the flight, including spending $900 to rebook with another airline and carrying her belongings and child across the airport without her stroller, which was not returned upon deplaning.
Other Spirit Airlines customers at Los Angeles International Airport shared their views on the situation, many of whom felt the flight attendants’ actions were uncalled for. Passenger Melissa Kidd remarked, “It’s a tank top. I don’t see a problem with it at all.” Another traveler, Andrea Berber, echoed this sentiment, calling the situation “ridiculous.”
KCAL News has reached out to Spirit Airlines for comment, but the airline has yet to respond. Additionally, the three women who were removed from the flight report that they have not received a refund for their tickets.
